Lysefjord
Noted for its spectacular beauty, the fjord was poetized by French writer Victor Hugo in Toilers of the Sea after a visit in 1866. The Lysefjord is approximately 40 kilometers in length and is the southernmost of the biggest fjords in Norway. Lysefjord means light fjord,"\ thought to be derived from the lightly colored granite along its sides. The fjord was carved by the action of glaciers in the ice ages and was flooded by the sea when the later glaciers retreated. Amazingly, in some sections, the Lysefjord is as deep as its surrounding mountains are high. It is 13 meters (43 feet) deep in Stavanger but drops to a depth of over 400 meters (1,300 feet) in the shadows of famous Pulpit Rock.
(Prekestolen) Pulpit Rock
This cliff-top platform stands 1,982 feet (604 meters) above the sea, overlooking the Lysefjord and offering magnificent views of the lush green mountains and valleys of the Ryfylke region. One of Norway's top attractions, Pulpit Rock was formed over 10,000 years ago when glacial activity sheared off part of the mountain. A two-hour hike up the craggy trail takes you past wild countryside, marshlands, and sparkling ponds before dramatically delivering you to the flat 25 x 25 meter plateau that juts out between the sky and the sea.
Stavanger
Seamlessly blending old-world charm with a modern European sensibility, Stavanger began as a sleepy coastal town that thrived on the fishing industry from the 1800s through World War II; then, in 1969, it was revitalized by the oil industry. Surrounded by breath-taking scenery and gateway to the Lysefjord, Stavanger boasts a well-preserved enclave and architectural showpiece of Norwegian history. Wooden houses with tiny front gardens line winding streets showcasing much of the charms of Stavanger when it was the canning capital of Norway.
