You haven't experienced Alaska until you've gotten up-close and personal with some of the powerful husky sled dogs that partake, and even compete in, Alaska's favorite sport.

This enticing half-day tour introduces you to Alaska dog sledding in the summertime, a season during which the furry athletes train, raise their puppies, meet their adoring public and treat visitors to a scenic ride down a mile-long trail deep in the Tongass National Forest. Your tour begins with approximate 35-minute scenic drive to the dog camp. Along the way, guides fill you in on the rich history of Skagway and Dyea with a narrated tour. Over 100 years ago, these two towns were filled with over 10,000 stampeders full of gold fever. The Musher's Camp is the summer home to around 200 dogs, some of which have competed in world-renowned races like the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest.

Begin with a comfortable 4x4 ride up a rugged mountain road in a specially designed Unimog. Have your camera ready for the dramatic scenes of snow-covered peaks, glacially fed streams and waterfalls, and the team of very excited Alaska Huskies that wait for you on the trail. Imagine the exhilaration you'll feel, after boarding your custom-designed wheeled summertime sled, as you'll fly down the mountain. Expert dog mushing is on full display and you'll top off your ride with the chance to meet your professional team and take memorable pictures with the dogs. After a drive to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats, with an eye out for eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders and more, you'll arrive at camp for a "Kennel Talk." Your hosts have shared their passion for dog sledding for years and will happily answer all your questions. Next you'll enjoy puppy play time! Who can resist the endearing, tail-wagging charm of a passel of puppies? And, interestingly, your affections actually help to socialize these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success.

Rounding out your tour, you'll enjoy a crackling fire and a unique gift shop, before traveling back to your ship through dramatic scenery: experiences you'll be talking about for years to come.

This excursion was chosen last season by Princess passengers for overall tour quality and outstanding customer service and awarded Tour Guide of the Season in Skagway.
