Acadia National Park/Park Loop Road
First established in 1916, Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is the oldest national park east of the Mississippi. A 47,000-acre Atlantic coastline recreation area, it is best showcased by Park Loop Road, a 27-mile stretch designated as one of America's most scenic byways. It ribbons past such highlights as Otter Cliff, the summit of Cadillac Mountain, with its 360-degree view of the coast, historic Jordan Pond House, and Thunder Hole, where, if the tides are favorable, you will see the ocean spray shooting high into the air.
What you will see along the way:
Your adventure begins with a leisurely drive through Bar Harbor and along the stunning coastline of Acadia, the first National Park east of the Mississippi. Take in sweeping views of rugged shoreline, evergreen forests of spruce and pine, and mountain summits. Travel down the Park's 27-mile Park Loop Road past Thunder Hole. Enjoy views of Otter Cliff and Maine's rocky coast. Drive to the summit of the Cadillac Mountain, then continue through Acadia, into Bar Harbor.

Named for Sieur de la Mothe Cadillac, who migrated from France and settled in Maine during the 17th century, the 1,532-foot-tall mountain is not only the tallest on Mount Desert Island but also has the distinction of being the highest point on the North American east coast. Composed of pink granite millions of years ago when the earth's tectonic and volcanic forces pushed the land upward to form the island's mountains, the summit offers awe-inspiring views of Bar Harbor and the islands beyond.

Special Notes:

Tour may operate in alternative order. In the event of adverse weather conditions or summit closures imposed by the National Park Service due to heavy traffic, the stop at Cadillac Mountain cannot be guaranteed. There can be strong winds atop Cadillac Mountain. Dressing warmly is recommended - a sweater and Windbreaker.

NOTE: Guests who are wheelchair confined should book tour BHB-101 which uses the same transportation as this tour. Non-confined guests must climb 3 to 5 steps into the transportation.
