WHAT YOU VISIT

Hump Island Oyster Company & Kelp Farm
In an intimate small-group setting, visit the only working oyster and kelp farm site in the state. Established in 2010 on Hump Island (named in 1869 for its hump-like shape), the farm offers a unique look at mariculture and the positive impacts it has on our oceans and environment. Paired with an ocean-to-table sampling of the locally harvested oyster and kelp products this is an excellent hands-on land and sea combination tour. After a narrated drive to the launch site, you'll receive a safety briefing and step aboard the USCG certified vessel that features a large deck for unobstructed views and heated, covered indoor seating. Once you arrive at this one-of-a-kind floating facility you'll be greeted by the oyster farm team who will provide you with an overview of the facility and oyster growing process, followed by a walk-through of the daily cultivation performed to raise oysters from the width of a thumbnail to market size. The touch tank, a visitor favorite, showcases local sea life and will allow you to get a close up view of the indigenous organisms regularly seen in the local waters. Footage from an underwater drone will be shown so that you can get a better feel for the ecosystem that surrounds the oyster rafts and also take in the array of kelp on long lines as it sways with the movement of the tides below.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Clover Passage is famous for its wildlife and the captain will maneuver the boat so you can take that picture-perfect photo of whales, seals, sea lions, and eagles that may be cruising the waters. During your tour of the site, be sure to check out the oyster beds that are raised in trays suspended from cedar floats. As the tides ebb and flow twice a day, the deep nutrient rich waters are pushed through the narrow passages between the island and the floating farm. This upwelling of water creates a very unique flavor and some truly special oysters. The area is a tranquil and picturesque sanctuary frequented by the local community.

SNACKS
Lead with your taste buds at the on-site Oyster Bar, where you will have a truly Alaskan ocean-to-table culinary opportunity featuring locally harvested samples. Chefs and oyster lovers agree the taste of Ketchikan's oysters are unparalleled with a uniquely briny flavor. Following the tour, enjoy samples of miso-style soup with blanched kelp, oysters (raw or grilled), chips with kelp salsa and one non-alcoholic beverage.

SHOPPING
You will also have a chance to stop by the gift shop in search of that extra special souvenir, including the locally harvested products featured during your tour.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Your excursion begins with a narrated drive with a guide who is well trained to share highlights of local history and culture. Watch through your window as you ride along a coastal road that parallels the scenic Tongass Narrows.

Special Notes:

Guests must weigh a minimum of 40 lbs. Layered clothing and sensible shoes are recommended. The tour is not ADA accessible as there are multiple steps and uneven surfaces. Guests must be able to walk up 15 steps and navigate a tide-dependent ramp to access the vessel. Tour order may vary.
