Snow-capped mountains, an extinct volcano, totem poles and a history that includes Tlingit Alaska Natives and Russian settlers may be an unlikely setting for art and culture but during the first half of the 19th century Sitka was known as the "Paris of the Pacific." The traditional Native village of Sitka was established as the capital of Russian America in 1808 and by mid-century the town boasted an opulent opera house, a grand performing arts theater, and charming buildings, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places such as St. Michael's Cathedral.

Although San Francisco would later capture the "Paris of the Pacific" title, Sitka's art and culture continued to flourish. Discover how Sitka's natural wonders and laid-back charm inspires its artists on a two-hour-and-thirty-minute guided walking tour that takes you around town and into a number of working studios.

Before you begin your walk from the pier be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera to capture Sitka's charming sights.

Learn Sitka's rich cultural history as your guide leads you through Sitka's art district, which boasts a number of art galleries specializing in Alaska Native art, photography, pottery, textiles, glass, totem woodcarvings and more. Visit several galleries along the way and meet the masters behind the creations and hear how Sitka's breathtaking beauty ignites their creativity.

From here you'll stroll to the Wild Arts Gallery for a look at the skilled artists who work in glass.

One of the first sights you'll see when you walk into the studio is the high temperature kilns mounted on the wall. Each one has an opening in the bottom, which allows plenty of room for guest to step under it and pull the glass, twisting it to make a beautiful glass cane. Learn the coveted methods used in Italian glass to create all the intricate designs and brilliant colors they are so famous for. After watching a demonstration, the glass is ready for you to stretch, twist and pull to create your glass cane. All necessary safety gear is provided for you.

Later, enjoy some free time to browse the gallery and purchase a unique keepsake as a reminder of your artistic discovery in Sitka.

Special Notes:

Minimum age is 14 years. Tour is designed for guests with a reasonable level of mobility as you will walk to each gallery which are 250 to 300 steps apart.
