WHAT YOU VISIT

Alaska Raptor Center
Established in 1980, this non-profit organization is also a center of bald eagle research and environmental conservation. Dedicated to treating injured bald eagles and other birds of prey, the Center's 17-acre rehabilitation facility and flight-training center is the only full-service avian hospital in Alaska devoted solely to birds of prey (raptors). Inside the state-of-the-art Bald Eagle Flight Training Center, you'll observe eagles and other raptors in the final stages of rehabilitation before they're released back into the wild. During an interactive presentation, you'll meet a glove-trained raptor and the opportunity to fully appreciate up close the splendor and dramatic beauty of the resident raptors in their outside habitats.

Fortress of the Bear
Home to several orphaned Alaskan brown bear cubs, the 15-year-old sanctuary's open-air three-quarter-acre habitat closely replicates the animal's natural environment. The large, covered viewing platform set within 25 feet of the enclosure offers ample opportunities to observe the bears and to watch experienced naturalists share their love and knowledge of these feared, yet most revered forest creatures.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Have your camera at the ready as you marvel at the magnificence of bald eagles, owls, hawks, and other birds of prey at the Alaska Raptor Center. And focus your lens on the cute but not-so-cuddly bears at the Fortress of the Bear-their funny antics will keep you amazed and amused.

SNACK
Soak in the waterfront views of the Channel Club Restaurant as you enjoy samples of local microbrews and wild Alaska salmon served over rice with beurre blanc sauce.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
These two important rescue centers border the ancient Tongass National Forest, the nation's largest national forest at almost 17 million acres.
