WHAT YOU VISIT

The Birds of Hoonah
Designed for small groups and led by a local expert birder, this excursion is the only dedicated birding tour in Alaska offered to cruise guests and part of the proceeds go to the Juneau Audubon Society to support birding in the Hoonah area. Binoculars, rain jackets, and the highest quality spotting scopes will be provided.

With your guide in the lead, you'll visit many sites noted for birding activity. Along Port Frederick's shoreline you'll see seabirds feeding in the nutrient rich waters and a stop at the ferry terminal offers a look at pigeon guillemots, ducks and seabirds. Enjoy a brief stop at an active bald eagle's nest before heading out the road to the Long Island causeway where you'll scan for even more fine feathered friends. Then, you'll follow your guide down a trail through mixed forest and grasslands to find a menagerie of birds.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Focus your lens on flocks of shorebirds, ducks, eagles, crows, ravens, cormorants, and much more. While trekking along the trail, many birds such as warblers, sparrows, flycatchers, jays, woodpeckers, sapsuckers, wrens, kinglets, swallows, swifts, hummingbirds, creepers, chickadees and thrushes darting in and out of the trees.

REFRESHMENT
Relax with bottled water during your adventure.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Hoonah's lush temperate rainforest and its surrounding tidal waters are welcoming sights.

Special Notes:

Minimum age is 8 years. There are no restroom stops along the tour. Guests must be able to walk over a variety of uneven terrain and steps for a total duration of one hour. Wear walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Binoculars, spotting scopes and bottled water provided.
