What You Will Visit:

Hoonah Village
The world's largest Tlingit village, the town of Hoonah is located on Chichagof Island. The Huna have lived in the Icy Strait area for thousands of years, and this fishing village stands as a testament to the strength of this coastal community. Guests touring the area learn the origins of the town, how the people rebuilt when the village was destroyed by fire during WWII, how locals "drive" the Alaska Marine Highway and many other aspects of life in this small heritage-rich village. You will also learn about how the town sustains itself through the fishing, timber and tourism industries. Make a stop to see Tlingit totems, hear the stories related to these poles and learn how to read them.

The Heritage Center Native Theater
Step into the beautiful Native Heritage Center, where Huna Tlingit culture comes to life. Here, a troupe of talented performers in colorful regalia will proudly share the Huna Tlingit hisory through traditional song and dance. Absorb the rich history and local culture during the performance and perhaps join in a traditional celebration.

What You See Along The Way:
As you tour the town, you will notice how few roads are paved and the lack of stoplights in the town. The Tlingit revere the land and the importance of the rainforest that envelops the island. Take in the indigenous plant life and the animals and local inhabitants.

Photo Opportunities:
Photo-stop opportunities allow a wonderful glimpse into the past. Please note that photographs are not permitted during the tribal performance, but afterwards you will have the opportunity to meet the actors and have your picture taken with them.

Special Notes:

There are hourly performances of the Tribal Dance Show, and you may choose to attend at your leisure. Photographing and videotaping the performances are strictly prohibited; however, performers are available for photos directly after the show.

Unaccompanied Minor Policy: Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
