WHAT YOU VISIT

Mackenzie State Recreation Area
This remote and beautiful 13-acre park boasts jagged lava cliffs, lava tubes and blowholes formed when hot lava met the cool sea waters. Once closed in 2018 by the marching 40-foot-tall wall of crumbly a'a lava as it oozed its way to the sea, the park reopened to an altered coastline and a new black sand beach.

Isaac Hale Beach Park
Lava flows encircled this popular park on Pohoiki Bay miraculously sparing the infrastructure while completely destroying everything around it. Be sure to check out the boat launch ramp, now sitting in a pond cut off from the ocean by a natural berm of lava.

Star of the Sea Painted Church
This church was built in 1927-1928 under the direction of the Belgian Catholic missionary priest Father Evarist Gielen, who painted the upper section of the church interior. In 1990, the church was moved to its present location just ahead of an advancing lava flow.

Hilo Bay
Enjoy a dip in a coastal lagoon protected by a reef. Grab a free snorkel set or just jump in the water and explore the unique lava rock coastline; kayaks and paddle boards are available to rent.

LUNCH
Relax with a deli-style lunch during your time at Hilo Bay.

SHOPPING
Stock up on fresh roasted Kona coffee, Hawaiian macadamia nuts, and other local products with a stop at Hilo Bay.
