What you will visit:

Akaka Falls State Park
A paved footpath meanders through Akaka Falls State Park, located along the northeastern Hilo coast. An uphill climb through rainforest scenery, bamboo groves and shading ferns, plus some stairs, brings you to Akaka Falls, the island of Hawaii's most famous waterfall, a dramatic 442-foot plunge over volcanic cliffs.

Rainbow Falls
Follow the Wailuku River to Rainbow Falls, an iconic waterfall featuring an 80-foot-tall cascade surrounded by tropical flora. Look for the rainbow effect produced by the spray that gives the waterfall its name.

Akatsuka Orchid Gardens
The Big Island is nicknamed the Orchid Isle. Immerse yourself in the scents and colors of some of the world's rarest and most beautiful exotic flowers. Established in 1974, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens is one of the world's leading cultivators of cattleya orchids, and more than 500 blooms are on display in huge greenhouses.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, Volcanoes National Park is a fascinating place sacred to the ancients and home to the goddess Pele. The park encompasses the summits of Kilauea and Mauna Loa, two of the world's most active volcanoes. Certified park staff introduce guests to the prehistoric-looking landscapes, which include the dramatic steam vents, ancient Thurston Lava Tube and otherworldly vistas from the Halemaumau crater overlook. Hawaiian legend tells that it is bad luck to remove a piece of lava, so don't be tempted; there are many a story about people mailing their souvenirs back to Hawaii each year!

What you will see along the way:
Beauty abounds as you drive through Hilo from one natural attraction to another. From glistening Onomea Bay to the azure blue Pacific Ocean, the interior landscapes are a potpourri of rainforest vegetation, fertile valleys, patchwork plantations and colorful floral blooms.

Lunch:
Assorted deli-style sandwiches, chips, granola bars, other snacks, water, soda and juice.

Shopping:
Tree-lined Banyan Drive offers unique souvenir shopping opposite the Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on the big island of Hawaii. Plenty of free parking is available. An array of shops offer souvenirs, wooden crafted gifts, apparel and more.

Special Notes:

Participants must be able to negotiate stairs to view Akaka Falls. While this is not a hiking tour, please be aware that the longest nature walk is about 1⁄2 mile each way, and includes the walk through the lava tube. Guests with heart problems are not allowed to participate. Children 7 years and under require a car seat, per Hawaii state law; the tour operator can supply a child safety or booster seat at no charge with advance notice to the Shore Excursions office on board.
