WHAT YOU VISIT
Pontremoli
Set between the river Magra and Verde in Tuscany's rolling green hills, the ancient town of Pontremoli hosts Medievalis, an annual event that commemorates its recognition as an independent municipality by Frederick II, King of Italy and Germany in 1226. From August 21st to 25th the picturesque village relives the days when it thrived with pilgrims traveling from Canterbury to Rome, knights, dancers and musicians, clergy, nobility, military, courtiers, and peasants. Once you arrive, you'll have four hours of free time to explore the village on your own.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Some of the Instagram-worthy sights are villagers dressed in period costumes, a parade of young men joyfully waving flags, fire and armed combat demonstrations, and don't miss the medieval architecture such as the sandstone tower houses.

LUNCH
Treat yourself to some of the local delicacies such as "amor" (a type of small cake, consisting of a creamy filling between wafers), "torta d'erbe" a pie filled with a mixture which may include Swiss chard, eggs, ricotta cheese, potato, rice and parmigiana cheese wrapped in a very thin pastry; and "testaroli," a flat baked pasta, often served with pesto. (Visitors can exchange Euros into "Grosso," the local currency used during Middle Ages to purchase food and beverage.)

SHOPPING
Stalls sell items such as hand-crafted brass and iron jewelry, artisan leather bound books with hand-made paper, natural soaps and foods.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
As you enter the historic heart of Pontremoli, you'll cross a huge medieval bridge and through a tangle of medieval alleyways to the festival.
