What you will visit:
Pisa (by Bicycle)
Pisa is one of Tuscany's most beautiful cities. Here, you will see the UNESCO World Heritage Site Il Campo dei Miracoli, or "the Field of Miracles," home of the famed Leaning Tower, which is actually the cathedral's bell tower, as well the duomo, the baptistery, the monumental cemetery and museums. Many people ask why it leans and what its original purpose was. The tower was meant to be the bell tower for the cathedral, but due to its faulty design and loose soil beneath it, it never fulfilled its purpose. The Leaning Tower of Pisa really is leaning! On the side where the tower is higher, it stands at 187.27 feet, and on the low side it stands at 186 feet.
What you will see along the way:
Your bike ride takes you through picturesque Pisa and into the historical city center. As you pedal along, your guide will point out several highlights, including the famous Leaning Tower complex with the cathedral and baptistery. Continue on past the monumental cemetery in the Square of Miracles, and admire Piazza dei Cavalieri anchored by the bronze statue of Cosimo de' Medici (1596). See Palazzo della Carovana and the Tower of Conte Ugolino where he was imprisoned. Arrive at the lungarni (along the Arno River), highlighting beautiful medieval and Renaissance Palaces, the tiny jewel of Santa Maria della Spina Church, Borgo Stretto and Corso Italia, the Old Market.
Shopping:
At the conclusion of the tour, you have the option to be dropped off in downtown Livorno for a little shopping. Return to the ship on your own.
