What you will visit:
Pontremoli (guided walking tour)
First settled around 1000 BC, this northernmost Tuscan city of Pontremoli, or "trembling bridge," is framed by the River Magra and the Verde Stream and is split into two sections that meet at the Piazza del Comune market square. A guided walk will take you to some of the town's architectural gems, including Pontremoli Cathedral, or "duomo," which boasts frescoes by Francesco Natali, and the impressive bell tower that dominates the Piazza Della Republica, and historic Piagnaro Castle, whose magnificent stone walls now house the fascinating Stele Statue Museum and offer sweeping views of the rolling hills and town below.

Medievalis Festival (Independent Exploration)
Take a step back in time at the annual Medievalis Festival. Founded as a celebration of the independence that was granted to Pontremoli at the arrival of the Emperor Frederick II in 1226 AD, this four-day extravaganza runs from August 21 through August 25 and boasts falconry exhibitions, flag waving performances, duels, and traditional foods. The highlight of the event is the daily tournament, where the three rival historic districts-Sommoborgo, Immoborgo and Contado-vie for superiority in a series of challenges to be awarded a daily prize.
What you will see along the way:
Sit back and relax as you travel into the northern Tuscan countryside, a picture-perfect landscape of rolling hills, wide fields of vineyards and olive groves, and small stone villages. It's a 90-minute drive to the medieval village of Pontremoli, nestled in a picturesque spot between two rivers, the Magra and Verde. Your guided stroll takes you down the once central main street that cuts through the historic middle of town. Pontremoli has two graceful stone bridges for pedestrians that connect the historic center with the part of town across the Verde River.
Lunch:
A decadent buffet lunch includes testaroli, a specialty pasta originated in northern Tuscany that dates back to the days of Ancient Rome. This flat, almost crepe like noodle, is accompanied by savory pies, cheeses, salamis, and jam tarts for dessert. Sip local wine or water with your meal.
