Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

This wonderful exploration of one of France's most loved regions, starts when you meet your driver and guide ship-side for a drive through colorful Provence. Leaving the harbor, you will drive along the motorway, passing through Salon de Provence, which is also known as 'olive tree' country, along the pretty Durance River, to historic Avignon. Look out for the many vineyards, orchards and cypress trees that pepper the landscape.
Arriving in Avignon, which sits on the left bank of the river Rhone, you will join your guide for the delightful walk to the Palace of the Popes, which stands proud in the heart of Avignon. This abandoned, fortified palace became the residence of nine popes from 1309 to 1378 during their exile from Rome. Their time here became known as the Great Schism, and their palace remains one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in France. You will be able to stroll the deserted galleries, chambers and chapels with their grand arches.
After you've toured this incredible building, your guide will lead you to Avignon old town, and around this ancient walled city. Stroll the narrow-cobbled streets, while your guide recounts Avignon's history and its important role during the Great Schism. View the historic arched Pont d'Avignon bridge, which dates back to 1171 and was made famous by the French nursery rhyme, "Sur le pont d'Avignon" ("On the bridge of Avignon").
After you have worked up an appetite you head to a local restaurant where you will enjoy a traditional Provencal lunch with wine, before browsing the nearby shops for souvenirs, candies and local crafts.
Back on the motorcoach you will return to the pier driving along the motorway. .
