Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

From your Princess ship, a local boat will take you across the caldera to the volcano, affording wonderful views of Santorini as you sail.

Santorini is an extraordinary island, formed after an enormous volcanic eruption that destroyed earlier civilizations, leading to the creation of the caldera. Some even believe that Santorini is the famous Lost City of Atlantis - the mythical land that sunk into the sea without a trace after the gods were angered.

The two small volcanic islands in the center of the Santorini caldera are Palea and Nea Kameni. Your destination, Nea Kameni ("Young Burnt Island"), is the youngest and began forming only 425 years ago.

Once at the Nea Kameni volcano, you'll begin your hike to the top. This approximately 40-minute climb is steep and on an uneven surface, so be sure to wear proper footwear. As you get nearer to the top you will begin to smell a strong sulfur odor and feel the temperature rising. Once at the summit, you will be able to see the black lava blocks, domes of magma that literally froze in mid-air. The views of the main island are spectacular.

Located around the shores of Nea Kameni, you will encounter several hot springs. Geologists believe that the hot springs of Nea Kameni have concentrated iron and manganese. The water temperature is about 35 degrees Celsius and contains a high content of sulfur, which is thought to have healing properties. Minerals in the water alter its color, which displays every hue from green to deep orange. The waters are quite shallow, but your boat will stop as close to the springs as possible for a photo opportunity. Weather permitting, anyone who wishes to go swimming can jump in and feel the water gradually changing temperature as you get closer to the ashore.

Sailing back to your Princess ship, you'll experience lovely scenic views of the island.

Special Notes:

The tour will only operate weather permitting. If the boat cannot tie up at the ship, you may depart and/or return from the port. The walk to the volcano crater is approximately 40 minutes over uneven ground, loose volcanic rocks and an incline.

It is recommended walking shoes or hiking boots be worn. Also, take a hat, sunscreen and water; there is limited shade on the volcano. For swimming, passengers must use a ladder to enter and exit the water. Swimwear may change color due to the sulfur water; wear swimsuit and bring a towel.

The smell of sulfur and heat can be strong while on the volcano. Passengers with breathing problems should take it into consideration before booking the tour.
