Step off the beaten path and avoid the crowds when you explore the charming, lesser-known villages of Megalochori and Emporio. Your four-hour tour also includes a visit to the beautiful, black-sand Perissa Beach, so be sure to wear your swim suit under your clothes and bring sunscreen and a towel.

Just 15 minutes from Athinios lies Megalochori, the largest village on the Santorini plain. A graceful bell-tower archway welcomes you to picturesque Megalochori, an inland town that dates to the 17th century. With its neo-classical design, whitewashed buildings, stone-cobbled pathways and sparkling domed churches, it's a treat to wander the quiet pedestrian streets peering into the flower-filled courtyards of the historic homes and mansions. Stroll into the center square, the perfect spot for a coffee in a local taverna or a game of "tavli" (backgammon) with the locals. Megalochori is the heart of Santorini's wine industry, and the surrounding vistas are lush and fragrant. Pick up a bottle of the famous sweet wine Vinsanto, a lovely memento of your visit. The locally grown tomatoes are also sensational and served fresh, sundried or cooked into desserts. You'll want to have your camera at the ready for two famous churches, the Panagia ton Isodion, dedicated to the blessed Virgin Mary, and Agios Nikolaos Marmaritis, a 4th century Doric temple that was converted into a Christian church.

Continue to Emporio Village, the largest settlement in Santorini nestled at the base of Mt. Prophet Elias. This well-preserved enclave has a medieval atmosphere centered on its 15th century fortress. There are also two Cycladic churches crowned with cobalt blue domes and bell towers. As you stroll through the town, note how tightly packed the houses are; this was a safety precaution during the Venetian era. Many have been lovingly restored.

Your final stop will be at the volcanic beach of Perissa-a seemingly endless stretch of pebbly, black sand. Perissa is the most popular beach on the island, and during the summer months, it's definitely the place to be. Here, you'll have free time to swim and to enjoy this famous beach fringed with colorful restaurants and outdoor cafes. In addition to the fun in the sun, the vistas are incredible. A mammoth rock called Mesa Vouno seemingly rises from the sea, and against a backdrop of azure waters and black sand, the effect is pretty dramatic!

Your tour ends with a 10-minute walk down to the cable car station, or, if you prefer, you can stay in town and return to the ship at your leisure.

Special Notes:

Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat. Expect crowding and long lines at the cable car station.
