Step back in time at the ruins of Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan commercial center, and discover the remnants of its culture buried beneath the ash of a volcanic eruption that occurred in 1450 B.C. Then, explore the traditional streets of Oia on this fascinating six-hour tour.

Board a comfortable motorcoach and journey to the remnants of a Bronze Age civilization. The ancient site of Akrotiri, unearthed in 1967 after being shrouded for over 3,000 years, is remarkably well preserved, offering great insight into the island's ancient history.

Your knowledgeable guide will escort you through this unveiled city, considered one of the most important prehistoric settlements in the Mediterranean and often referred to as the Minoan Pompeii. Archaeologists have discovered sophisticated multilevel buildings with elaborate plumbing systems and an array of pottery, clay vessels, furniture and home furnishings from this once prosperous seaside village.

Continue on to the traditional village of Oia. Pronounced "Eee-ah," the village is perched high atop the cliffs of Santorini's northern terminus. Known for its quiet beauty and spectacular sunsets, this spot boasts breathtaking views of neighboring volcanoes. Stroll through the narrow, cobblestone lanes, and view the brilliantly whitewashed buildings, shops, sun-bathed cafés and blue-domed churches. The natural beauty and tranquility of Oia's landscape has inspired artists from around the world, and numerous galleries can be found in the area.

Enjoy free time to discover Oia's wonders on your own. Stroll through the cobblestone streets admiring the world-famous Cycladic architecture and the beautiful old mansions perched cliff-side. Be sure to stop to snap photographs of the surrounding Cycladic isles and the magnificent views of the caldera.

There are many restaurants and cafés to choose from at a variety of price points. The regional cuisine is distinguished by the use of its indigenous ingredients. The Santorini cherry tomatoes burst with a high sugary flavor, and the unusual white eggplants, considered an aphrodisiac, are known as the Santorini "apple of love." Be sure to try a glass of chilled ouzo, the national drink of Greece - a clear aperitif flavored with anise.

Browse the art galleries displaying local talent and shop for artisan souvenirs, such as pottery, handmade woodwork and trinkets made from golden amber.

Your last stop on the tour is Fira, the cultural and commercial center of Santorini. The island's capital is well suited for tourists and has a number of galleries, museums and cultural attractions and a variety of dining venues all lining the cobbled streets that ribbon their way through town. Here, you'll meet your transportation and return to port. If you prefer to stay to explore independently, you can take a steep walk to the upper portion of town and meet the aerial cable car ride, which will take you to the tender.
