What you will visit:
Athens
The historical capital of Europe, Athens dates back to the earliest settlement in the Neolithic age. The 5th century B.C. was the heyday of this spectacular city, with its civilization acquiring universal significance. As time marched on, Athens saw many conquerors, and in their wake were left splendid monuments and magnificent temples. In 1834, Athens became the capital of the modern Greek state. Its town center is reminiscent of the ancient landscape, leading to its famed archaeological site, the Acropolis, where its largest building is the awe-inspiring Parthenon, built as a temple to the goddess Athena.
What you will see along the way:
There is so much to see as your motorcoach traverses the magnificent city of Athens, but undoubtedly visitors anticipate the dramatic views of the Acropolis. As you gaze upon the spectacular ruins, your guide will describe the history of these great temples and significant buildings, including the famed Parthenon, one of the greatest monuments in ancient civilization. Your narrated drive also passes a host of major sites, including the statue of Lord Byron, Constitution Square, the former Royal Palace, the National Gardens, the Academy, and the University Library.
Photo Opportunities:
There are plenty of picture-perfect memories to be made on this excursion, but two highlights are:
Panathenaic Stadium (traffic permitting)
This marble stadium was built to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and was used again in the 2004 Olympics for the finish of the marathon and the archery competition.
Lycabettus Hill
The highest point in the center of Athens, Lycabettus Hill, accessed by cable car, is the highest summit of the city. Marvel at the views that extend to the seaside and the iconic Acropolis.
