What you will visit:

Viking Ship Museum
Glimpse into the world of the Vikings at this fascinating museum divided into two sections: the Viking Ship Hall, where the original vessels are displayed, and an exterior boatyard, where archaeological discovery takes place. In 1962, 1,000-year-old remains of the Skuldelev ships, five original Viking longboats, were excavated after being purposely sunk in the Roskilde Fjord as protection from an enemy attack by sea. The Viking Ship Museum, built overlooking this fjord, houses the ships of war and cargo ships in its impressive interiors. Outside you'll find the archaeology workshop, and in the summer months, master craftsmen preserve the local maritime history by constructing full-scale reconstructions of Viking longboats and wooden ships using the techniques and materials of prehistoric and medieval times

Roskilde Cathedral
Scandinavia's first Gothic brick cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries as the forefront of European religious architecture. This UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 has been the burial grounds for the Danish royal family since the 15th century. Outside, admire this monument's tall spires and architectural details that have been added throughout the centuries, a true representation of the development of European religious design, all set off by the wonderful views of the Roskilde Fjord. Step inside to admire its opulent interior, frescos, bronze statues and a intricately carved choir stall with biblical scenes. Many Danish monarchs are interred in ornate tombs all under glorious vaulted ceilings.

What you will see along the way:
It's an approximately one-hour motorcoach ride from port to Roskilde, a 1,000-year-old city rich in architecture, history and Viking heritage. Once the capital of Denmark, Roskilde was founded many centuries ago by Viking warriors, and it has since emerged as a significant trading center. Roskilde's picturesque location beside the sparkling fjord is an ancient city with a vibrant presence. Stændertorvet Square is the center of community activity and home to the old Town Hall. The hall's step-shaped tower once adorned St. Lawrence Church, which fell in ruins. The square also sports colorful weekly markets where locals display their wares.

Special Notes:

Terrain at the Viking Ship Museum is uneven; 25 minutes of standing is required at the church. Inside church visit(s) may not be possible if religious services are being held. Minimum age is 10 years.
