What you will visit:
St. Peter's Square
The core of Vatican City, the smallest state in the world, is St. Peter's Square, a bustling piazza where the masses receive the pope's weekly blessings. The spectacular, ornate square and its imposing colonnade leading to St. Peter's Basilica hold 60,000 people, and the basilica is regarded as one of the holiest and greatest churches of Christendom. Michelangelo deserves much of the credit for the massive reconstruction, completed in 1626, and his famous Pieta masterpiece is one of the many heavenly Renaissance and baroque sculptures and mosaics located inside. At St. Peter's Square you will have one hour to explore the bustling square, hunt for souvenirs and visit the framed Basilica, with the largest interior of any Christian church in the world.
What you will see along the way:
Departing from Civitavecchia, your 90-minute motorcoach ride to the heart of Rome takes you through the glorious Roman countryside and along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Once inside the city, a panoramic driving tour introduces you to Rome, Italy's cosmopolitan capital city, a thriving metropolis that fuses the old and the new. Rome, the Eternal City, is 25 centuries old, and the glories of ancient Rome, the majesty of the Renaissance, and the modern architecture of today seamlessly blend into an inspiring whole. Your city tour traverses the streets and spotlights such beloved landmarks as the mighty Colosseum, the landscaped greenery of Villa Borghese, Via Vittorio Veneto (one of Rome's most famous boulevards).
