Between Rome and Florence lies the city of Orvieto, a 90-minute scenic motorcoach ride from the port of Civitavecchia. A steep, winding road creates a dramatic entrance to this fortified medieval town, home to world-famous vineyards, beautiful, hand-made ceramics and the Duomo, a magnificent 13th century cathedral. Your local guide will greet you upon arrival and orient you to the historic town.

A walking tour through the picturesque streets reveals that few things have been built more recently than the 14th century. Once a citadel of the Etruscans, this ancient hilltop city now stands guard over the bountiful vineyards below, known for producing dry white wines made from the Trebbiano grapes, which are enjoyed and appreciated throughout the world. The highlight to any day spent in Orvieto is a visit to one of the greatest Gothic buildings in Italy, the Duomo. Built in the 13th century to commemorate the Miracle of Bolsena, this stunning structure features elaborate carvings and dazzling mosaic work. In comparison to other cathedrals in Europe, the Duomo is notable for using a wider variety of materials in its ornamentation. The interior chapels are resplendent with frescos, including Signorelli's masterpiece, "Last Judgment." Your tour includes both interior and exterior views of this architectural wonder.

A welcome respite to your day, lunch is served in a local restaurant and features traditional Umbrian dishes and a glass of locally produced wine. Fresh, homegrown ingredients make each dish a colorful and flavorful delight. After lunch you're free to browse the city's boutiques, which showcase the handicrafts of the area. In addition to the majolica pottery for which the area is known, you'll find intricate lace making, woodcrafts and charming Pinocchio dolls. Of course, the wine from the local vineyards is readily available, and tastings are available in town.

Your day concludes with a return motorcoach ride to port, affording beautiful scenic views and relaxed conversation about all you have seen in the magical city of Orvieto.

This tour is not available to passengers beginning or ending their voyage in Civitavecchia (Rome).

Shops may be closed on Sunday's and public holidays. However, souvenir shops will be open.

Tour groups are not allowed inside the Duomo during mass services. If a mass service is taking place, your guide will explain the church from the outside only and you will then be allowed to view the interior on your own.

Proper attire that covers shoulders and legs must be worn by both men and women in the Duomo of Orvieto - mini-skirts, shorts and capri pants are not acceptable.

Euros or credit cards are required for purchases.

Photography and video are not permitted inside the Duomo.

This tour may operate in reverse order.
