What you will visit:

The Harold L. Lyon Arboretum
Tucked into a tropical rainforest at the top of the Manoa Valley, this 200-acre botanical garden showcases over 5,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants. Part of the University of Hawaii, the Lyon Arboretum serves as a research facility and outdoor classroom for the study of exotic tropical plants, including rare and endangered native Hawaiian foliage, ancient Polynesian botanicals and the largest collection of palm tree varieties on Earth, which grow in abundance in the more than 185 inches of rainfall each year. With colorful birds and butterflies flitting through the trees, this restful retreat with rustic walking trails is a highlight of the island.

What you will see along the way:
A scenic, 30-minute motorcoach drive to the botanical gardens is an opportunity to gaze out the window at the beauty of this emerald green valley. The undulating, fertile hills have nurtured everything from Hawaiian taro farms and cattle ranches to coffee plantations and Japanese rice paddies. When New England missionaries arrived, they erected charming Victorian mansions. Traveling through the historic valley offers many photographic opportunities and the opportunity to learn the area's local history and lore.

Photo Opportunity:
Pu'u 'Ualaka'a Lookout
The vantage point from the top of Mount Tantalus, 1,048 feet above sea level, offers awe-inspiring views that stretch across the far eastern side of Oahu all the way to Pearl Harbor, downtown Honolulu and the sparkling Pacific. Sometimes a multi-hued arch can be seen across the Valley of the Rainbows far below. This picture-perfect spot was featured in the Elvis Presley film Blue Hawaii.

Special Notes:

Minimum age is 5 years. Guests should wear comfortable clothing for hiking. Closed-toed hiking shoes are required. No exceptions. Shoes will get muddy. As it rains often, it is recommended to bring a poncho and sunscreen. Please be in good physical health as this tour does involve walking over uneven terrain. Expect to walk for two hours over a distance of approximately .5 miles.
