Venture into the heart of Huhu, the home of the war canoe and the centre of the historic cannibalistic hinterland. Interestingly, it is also the place where part of Papua New Guinea's constitution was first drafted by the first governor general, Sir John Guise. As you journey through the region, you'll hear about the history and culture of Tawala. Pass through one of the world's largest Palm Oil Plantations, spanning endless hectares, and learn about the plant itself.
Continue your journey to Bibiko village. Experience firsthand what local village life is like in Papua New Guinea and spend time amongst the locals. You'll hear about how the introduction of Western culture has been infused and integrated with their traditional way of life. You will also have the opportunity to sample local dishes from local clay pots using ingredients such as taro, banana, cassava, yam and leafy green vegetables.
Your next stop is at the site of a once active war canoe. Hear all about this tradition and discover what makes the war canoe so significant and central to village life. Visit the Milne Bay War Memorial, which was constructed by Australian soldiers. Learn about the rich heritage and war history of the site. The Battle of Milne Bay was fought here and played an integral role in World War II. It was at this location where the Allied troops defeated the Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces, effectively halting their advance across the Pacific. After spending time at the memorial, you'll reboard your coach for the short journey back to the pier.
