Explore Cable Beach, a shimmering stretch of sand that takes its name from the Submarine Telegraph Cable that was laid between Broome and Java in 1889. Home to crystal-clear waters, gentle surf, and pindan cliffs, today it is a popular location for one of the world's great vacation experiences: a camel safari at sunset!

Meet your knowledgeable handler/guide at the wharf in Broome and begin your easy half-day excursion with a fascinating overview of the history of the camel in Western Australia. Learn how these intrepid animals were imported into the country from Arabia, India, China and Mongolia and how their ability to carry up to 600 pounds across vast distances garnered the nickname "ship of the desert."

While they are no longer needed for transportation, camels still play a vital role in the local economy. As you ride off into the sunset, crossing 13 miles of shimmering white sands, you'll experience firsthand aspects of the camel's physiology and temperament: features that have allowed man and camel to live and work together successfully for thousands of years.

You'll feel as though you've journeyed back in time as your friendly, well-trained mount carries you along the gently lapping shores of the Indian Ocean. From your unique perspective (camels average 7 feet in height, 1 1/2 times as large as the normal horse), you'll gaze out upon the passing scenery as your mount transports you along at a relaxing amble of about 3 miles per hour.

Marvel at the expanse of pristine water, the shimmering white sand, and the rugged red rock of this distinctive "pindan" terrain. Then, hold your breath as the blazing sun dips below the horizon and melts into the mysterious depths of the Indian Ocean.

Upon completion of your ride, dismount and view the high-quality photographs which were taken during your tour: available for purchase as the perfect memento of your trip. Then, re-boarding your cruise ship at the wharf, you'll bid a fond farewell to the gangly cud-chewing creature with which you shared the adventure of a lifetime.
