WHAT YOU VISIT
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Situated at the northern end of Big Sur, the reserve boasts five miles of trails for all hikers from beginners to experienced. Acclaimed as the "crown jewel" of California's 280 state parks, the 350-acre headland boasts dramatic rock formations rising from the ocean, patches of pine/oak woodland, and flower-filled meadows and grassland. Experience its wonder through the eyes of local private guide Monica Hudson, former guide with the California State Parks who literally wrote the only book on Point Lobos. Follow in her footsteps and hear her stories about the area's cultural and natural history.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
The Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is a photographer's delight. Rocky cliffs that form the point's headland give way to rolling patches of forests, canyons, and wildflowers on one side, and the crashing waves of the Pacific on the other. There are over 250 bird and animal species inside the reserve including small birds such as the chestnut-backed chickadee, the California quail and red-tailed hawks; and larger animals like weasels, deer, badgers, bobcats and rabbits. And the ocean waters are home to sea lions, harbor seals, elephant seals, sea otters, and is a year-round stopping point for orcas.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
From Monterey, you'll journey south along the iconic Highway 1, named one of the best scenic drives in the U.S. by Forbes and Lonely Planet, and a "Drive of a Lifetime" by National Geographic Traveler.

Special Notes:

Please note – Although trails are wide and well maintained, they are gravel and dirt and wheel chairs are not suitable. Trails range from moderate to strenuous hiking.
