In 1542, Portuguese explorer Juan Cabrillo sailed through what is now known as the Santa Barbra Channel Islands. Spanish conquistador Sebastian Vizcaino arrived in 1602 and 167 years later soldiers and their families settled in the area; the Santa Barbara Mission was built and agriculture and cattle ranches flourished.

The Spanish governed the area until 1822 when California became a Mexican territory. The Mexican period didn't last long. With America's victory during the Mexican War of Independence, California became a U.S. state in 1850.

With such strong ties to the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, how did a Danish town spring up just a few short miles away?

In 1911, three Danish immigrants purchased almost 10,000 acres of land in the lovely Santa Ynez Valley in hopes of building a community for Danish immigrants. Hundreds of Danes arrived to this new town named Solvang, which means 'sunny meadow'. Through the decades, locals adapted to the American way of life but the town continued to reflect its Danish heritage.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera to capture each enchanting sight. You'll have plenty of free time to explore at your leisure, shop for mementos, visit attractions and stop for refreshments or snacks and are advised to bring U.S. dollars to cover your expenses.

As you make your 50-minute drive north to Solvang, you'll be driving through picture postcard scenery of verdant hillsides and acres of sun soaked vineyards. Upon arrival, you'll have two hours to explore on your own.

Perhaps you'd like to visit one or more of the 150 one-of-a-kind shops that offer a variety of items. Maybe soak up the beguiling architecture. Many of the buildings are reminiscent of "bindingsvaerk", a half-timbered construction style that dates back to Denmark's 16th century. You can walk to replica of the famous Little Mermaid statue as seen in Copenhagen's harbor as well as the bust of famed Danish fable writer Hans Christian Andersen.

To learn more about Andersen, be sure to check out the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, which displays original letters and photographs, a model of Andersen's childhood home and first editions of his work. For a look at Solvang's early history, a trip to the Elverhoj is a must see. It is one of the few museums outside of Denmark devoted to the Danish culture and the Danish-American experience.

Enjoy a taste of Denmark with a visit to a local restaurant where you can purchase open face Danish sandwiches. Are you hungry for something delicious? Try a Danish dessert called Aebleskiver, a Pancake like ball coated with powdered sugar and smothered in raspberry preserves.

At the completion of your tour, you'll return to the coach for the scenic ride back to your ship.
