Historical Ketchikan & Creek Street Walking Tour

This short yet fascinating walking tour starts when you meet your very special guide of Tlingit descent who shares personal knowledge of the many changes Ketchikan has experienced over the years. During this easy stroll along nine blocks of this unique city, your guide will explain the significance of the many totem poles you will encounter on your journey, and the importance of them within Native culture.

Part of the one-and-a-half-hour walk sees you stroll along Ketchikan's infamous Creek Street, the former red light district, where you will learn of its important economic role in the city's early history. You will also learn about the infamous and historic "Married Man's Trail" and hear from your guide how it received its intriguing name. Ketchikan is known as the "Salmon Capital of the World" and its local economy relies on the fishing industry, so it's only natural that your tour guide will explain the function of one of the city's salmon ladders. Your guide will tell you of the incredible journey salmon endure as they return to their spawning ground.

As you wander the streets with purpose, learning more about this alluring city, you will be able to enjoy the plentiful and beautiful trees, shrubbery and flowers that line the route, and your guide will be on hand to discuss their importance to the Tlingit's food gathering practices. Returning to the downtown shopping area near the cruise ship pier, any questions you may have are encouraged, as your host would like you to leave Ketchikan with a better understanding of the community and its Native culture.

Length of walk is approximately 9 blocks.

This tour can accommodate electric wheelchairs and scooters, as well as manual wheelchairs if participant can negotiate the entire tour on their own or with the assistance of a traveling companion. Passengers with disabilities must contact the onboard Tour Office at least 48 hours prior to the excursion to ensure arrangements can be made to meet their particular needs.
